About

St Fagans, Cardiff CF5 6XB

St Fagans is one of the most remarkable museums in Britain — a 100-acre open-air museum on the outskirts of Cardiff where over 40 original buildings from across Wales have been dismantled, transported, and rebuilt. You can walk through a medieval farmhouse, a Victorian school, a working bakery, a miners' institute, an Iron Age roundhouse, and a terrace of Valleys workers' cottages — all in an afternoon. The buildings are furnished and maintained with extraordinary attention to detail. Costumed interpreters bake bread in the old bakery (you can buy it), demonstrate traditional crafts, and bring the buildings to life. The grounds include formal gardens, woodland, and a working farm with rare Welsh breeds. St Fagans won the Art Fund Museum of the Year in 2019, and it's easy to see why. It's a living, breathing record of Welsh life across centuries. Allow at least half a day — many families spend the whole day here. It's completely free (car parking charges apply), about 20 minutes from the city centre by bus. One of the best free days out in Britain, without exaggeration.
