About

Tranmer House, Sutton Hoo, Woodbridge, Suffolk IP12 3DJ

Sutton Hoo is one of the most important archaeological sites in Britain — the burial ground where in 1939 an undisturbed Anglo-Saxon ship burial was discovered containing a treasure hoard that rewrote our understanding of the Dark Ages. The gold helmet, sword fittings, and jewellery (now in the British Museum) revealed a sophisticated culture far removed from the 'dark ages' label. The National Trust site tells the story beautifully. The exhibition hall has replica treasures (the originals are in the British Museum, but the replicas are excellent and the story of the excavation — led by local amateur archaeologist Basil Brown, brilliantly portrayed by Ralph Fiennes in the Netflix film The Dig — is compelling. The burial mounds themselves are on a gentle ridge overlooking the River Deben, and the landscape feels ancient and atmospheric. The walking trails through the estate are lovely — the river views are beautiful, and the sense of walking where Anglo-Saxon kings walked is genuinely moving. The café is good. Allow 2-3 hours for a thorough visit. If you've seen The Dig, this is the real thing — quieter and more profound than the film conveys.
