About

Bakewell, Derbyshire DE45 1BT

Bakewell is the only town in the Peak District National Park and it's the natural hub — a handsome market town on the River Wye with a medieval five-arched bridge, independent shops, and a Monday market that's been running since 1330. The town is famously associated with the Bakewell Pudding (not tart — locals are particular about this), and two shops on the high street compete fiercely for the title of 'original'. The Monday market is excellent — a proper agricultural town market with local produce, plants, household goods, and a livestock section that keeps the agricultural character real. The Bakewell Show in August is one of the biggest agricultural shows in the Midlands. The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop and the Bakewell Pudding Factory are across the road from each other — try both and decide for yourself. Bakewell is a great base for walking — the Monsal Trail (a traffic-free path along the old Midland Railway through tunnels and over viaducts) starts nearby, and Chatsworth House is just down the road. The town gets very busy on Mondays (market day) and summer weekends, but the surrounding countryside is always accessible. The Peacock and the Rutland Arms are both good for a drink.
