About

Porthcurno, Penzance, Cornwall TR19 6JU

The Minack is an open-air theatre carved into the granite cliffs above Porthcurno beach, and it's one of the most spectacular performance venues on earth. Built by Rowena Cade from the 1930s onwards (she started with her gardener, some cement, and sheer determination), the theatre seats 750 on terraces cut into the rock, with the Atlantic Ocean as the backdrop and the sound of waves beneath the stage. Performances run from May to September — plays, musicals, opera, and concerts. Watching a Shakespeare comedy as the sun sets over the sea is genuinely unforgettable. Bring a blanket and layers — it can get cold even in summer when the wind picks up. There are no bad seats, but the higher rows have the best views of the sea behind the stage. Outside performance season, the theatre and its subtropical gardens are open to visitors as an attraction. The exhibition tells Rowena Cade's remarkable story. The café has one of the best views in Cornwall. Porthcurno beach below is stunning — turquoise water and white sand that could pass for the Caribbean on a sunny day. Book performance tickets well in advance — popular shows sell out months ahead.
