About

Pier 8, The Quays, Salford M50 3AZ

The Lowry is a landmark arts centre at Salford Quays that houses two theatres, gallery spaces displaying the world's largest public collection of L.S. Lowry paintings, and views across the Manchester Ship Canal to MediaCityUK. The building itself — a striking steel and glass structure designed by Michael Wilford — is as dramatic as anything on its stages. The theatre programme is broad: West End touring productions, opera, ballet, comedy, family shows, and new work. The Lyric Theatre seats 1,730 and hosts the big touring shows; the Quays Theatre (466 seats) is more intimate and programmes riskier work. The galleries displaying Lowry's matchstick men and industrial landscapes are free and surprisingly moving — his work captures the beauty and melancholy of working-class northern England. The waterfront location at Salford Quays is worth the trip alone — the Imperial War Museum North (Daniel Libeskind's dramatic building) is next door, and the whole quayside area has been transformed from derelict dockland into a genuine cultural quarter. The Metrolink takes you there in 15 minutes from the city centre.
