Cambridge University Botanic Garden
About
The Botanic Garden is 40 acres of beautiful gardens and glasshouses on the southern edge of the city centre. Founded in 1831 and home to over 8,000 plant species, it's a proper working botanic garden that also happens to be one of the loveliest green spaces in Cambridge. The systematic beds, rock garden, lake, and woodland garden offer different moods depending on the season. The Winter Garden is one of the best in the country — designed specifically for winter colour and scent, with witch hazels, viburnums, snowdrops, and bark that glows in low winter sun. The glasshouses are excellent — tropical, temperate, and arid zones. The autumn colour in the arboretum rivals any garden in England. It's a working research garden for the university, so unlike a municipal park there's genuine scientific purpose behind the planting — interpretation boards are informative without being dry. The café is lovely. A season ticket is excellent value if you live locally. Less crowded than the colleges, more peaceful than the city centre, and beautiful in every month of the year.
